Dr. Ajay shunmugarajan MD DM cardiology was born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. After completing his schooling from various parts of Tamil Nadu, he did his under graduation from Stanley medical college, Chennai. Ajay who was academically gifted , had made a mark for himself when he topped his batch in the final year exams, all the while also proving his clinical skills by securing five gold medals in various competitive clinical exams during the course of his undergraduate training. He then did his MD (internal medicine) from PGIMER Chandigarh, one of India’s top institutes. It was here, he realised his affinity towards cardiology. After topping the DM cardiology entrance exams in both AIIMS Delhi and PGIMER Chandigarh, Ajay chose to stay in PGIMER Chandigarh valuing clinical and hands on training over academics and research. Ajay once again topped his DM exams securing the highest aggregate ever over the last 5 years. During his senior residency he performed over 400 angioplasties including several complex cases ( LM Bifurcations, calcified lesions requiring rotablation and IVL,CTOs, etc.,) 200 cardiac rhythm device implantations (PPI, AICD, CRTs, LOT-CRT, etc.,) over 50 pediatric interventions ( device closure for PDA, ASD and VSD) all as the primary operator. Not to mention over 1000 cases as the first assistant to several complex cases including India’s first ever robotic PCI of a CTO. After coming to Chennai since 2023, Ajay regularly performs complex angioplasties and CRM device implantations.
